...the Spirit helps us in our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.
- Romans 8:26

Too Deep For Words

© Matt Henry 2001

Finding a prayer,
When no words will do,
The language of the soul
Is not for me and you.

When my mind fails,
And I feel so weak,
The Spirit comes to my soul,
My deepest prayers to seek.

The joys that fill our hearts,
And the pains that tear apart,
The Spirit knows them all
And our prayer is heard
Though it's too deep for words.

In silence, let us wait,
And let the Spirit sing
Of triumph or a lullaby,
The song that God will bring.

No words do we learn,
Still we hum along,
Knowing God is with us,
By the Spirit's song.

Oh, if we could feel,
Each other's deepest prayers,
Would we be so fast to judge
Or run away in fear?

The Spirit seeks us all,
Will this be enough
To remind us that we ache the same:
To be filled with love.
