Starfish
Traditional story
music/lyrics © 1997 Matt Henry
On the beaches of Mexico,
Starfish are washed up,
And left on the sand by the tide.
When the tide goes away and
The sun keeps on burning,
The starfish are left there to die.
On a beach there in Mexico,
A young girl is walking,
She's usually walking alone.
She bends down and picks up
A starfish she sees there,
And in to the sea it is thrown.
On a beach there in Mexico,
A young girl is walking,
One day she's not walking alone.
There's an old man who sees her
Throwing the starfish,
And there's something that he wants to know.
He says "hey, little girl don't you know,
There are hundreds of beaches in all Mexico,
And thousands of starfish
Washed up on each one,
Nothing at all can be done.
Nothing at all can be done."
The young girl continues to pick up the starfish,
And throw them into the waves.
The old man says "silly girl,
You're making no difference,
There are too many starfish to save."
The young girl just looks the old man in the eye,
Then she stares past the waves to the sun.
As she throws another starfish
Back into the sea,
"She says a difference was made to that one."
On a beach there in Mexico,
An old man is walking,
He's walking one day through the sand.
He bends done and picks up
A starfish he sees there,
And says to that thing in his hand:
"Hey starfish please don't be afraid,
I'm going to throw you back into the waves,
For a girl found me here
Just like you by the sea,
And she made a difference to me,
Yes she made a difference to me."
