Not just you, and not just me

© Matt Henry 2002

I know bad coffee when I taste it,
A precious chance when I waste it,
Nobody taught me,
I just know.

I recognize a soul's pain when I feel it,
Your dignity when I steal it,
Nobody taught me,
I just know.

In our veins, and from our hearts,
Our blood carries a pain, knowing we're apart,
This I know.

We're made to hold our hands together,
Yet I hold you on a tether,
Fear has me thinking
Of just me.

I hear Jesus saying "have no fear,"
Like he's whispering in my ear.
Am I scared to be seen,
Or to see?

In our veins, and from our hearts,
Our blood carries a pain, knowing we're apart,
This I know.

And if I see you, seeing me
And I see fear in your eyes,
It doesn't take so much
'Til love loses touch
And I learn to despise
Not just you,
And not just me,
But all I see.

The fire of God burns true
Deep in me, and in you,
When we see this as the same fire,
We'll be free.

In our veins, God's love mends,
Our blood carries the love we need to forgive each other,
Again and again, and again and again, and again and again and again,
And not just you, and not just me, but all we see.
