Each tradition has a different way of approaching the "unfathomable mystery," its own particular truth of insight, and represents a different way of playing the "divine music," that, Rumi says, "Love, the Supreme Musician, is always playing in our souls." - Andrew Harvey

I believe with you

© 2004 Matt Henry

When we say we believe in God, we agree
That the One is important to all
Yet we cannot resist the urge to insist
On our wisdom, thus we fall.

Beyond our best thoughts is the mind of our God
It's no wonder we say "God's above."
Yet when Christ walked the earth, looking up shrank in worth,
Look around, we're commanded to love.

Will our lives be drawn by the ideas between us,
Or carved from the love that we do?
Let us worship and pray such that each one can say
"Here in God, I believe, with you."

I believe it is God in whom we live
And move and have our being
I believe that our hearts hold more than our eyes
And that loving is richer than seeing.

We study and strive to be of one mind
Yet we're blessed each with different eyes.
And though tempted to know, may we humbly grow
To lean not on what we judge as wise

Will our lives be drawn by the ideas between us,
Or carved from the love that we do?
Let us worship and pray such that each one can say
"Here in God, I believe, with you."

All the battles still fought o'er the breadth of our thought
Will continue if we cannot cease
To rely on our rift instead of God's gift
That is grace, which will bring deeper peace.

To the table we're called, young and old, one and all
To pass bread and peace from  hand to hand
And the Spirit shall move to hold us as one
In ways our minds won't understand.

Will our lives be drawn by the ideas between us,
Or carved from the love that we do?
Let us worship and pray such that each one can say
"Here in God, I believe, with you."
